Sales leadership, written down

Twenty years of selling, the parts worth keeping. These are the long versions of what I post on LinkedIn most weeks: sales mindset, strategic sales, entering hard markets, deals that take a year, and the people who make all of it possible.

What a sales leader does

A sales leader decides what a team believes about the product, the market and themselves, then protects that belief through the quarters where the number is not there. A sales manager runs the pipeline; a sales leader runs the conditions the pipeline grows in. I have done both, in seven countries, and the second is the harder job.

Sales storytelling: the deal remembers the story, not the deck

Twenty years of selling and I cannot remember a single slide that closed anything. I can remember every story that did. What storytelling in sales actually is, and the three stories every seller should carry.

The old ABC was Always Be Closing. Twenty years in, I use a different one, and it is the only thing in sales you fully control.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a sales leader and a sales manager?
A sales manager runs the number: pipeline, forecast, activity. A sales leader also decides what the team believes about the product, the market and themselves, and protects that belief through the quarters where the number is not there. Ghassan's shorthand is that managers coach technique and leaders create the conditions for attitude.
What is strategic sales?
Selling where the deal is large enough that a map of the account matters more than the pitch: multiple stakeholders, a cycle measured in quarters, and pricing set with the second deal in mind. On this site it lives in the Whale deals piece.
How do you build confidence in sales?
By running the loop deliberately: a thought becomes a belief, a belief sets an expectation, expectation shapes attitude, attitude drives performance, and performance feeds belief. Do it once and it collapses on the first bad meeting. Do it every day and confidence stops depending on luck.
